THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 01, 2011 09:54 AM EDT

Scientists at the University of British Columbia announced Wednesday they may have uncovered a new explanation for how Alzheimer’s disease destroys the brain: a profusion of blood vessels in blood vessel walls.

Examining brain tissue from mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease, they found nearly double the density of capillaries compared to normal mice.

They found a similarly higher density of capillaries in brain samples of people who’d died of the neurodegenerative disease, compared to people who didn’t have it.

The blood vessel growth leads to a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier, possibly allowing the depositing of amyloid beta, which accumulates around neurons and eventually kills them.
